Spicy Blackened BBQ Tofu Steaks

Spicy Blackened BBQ Tofu Steaks

In our house as children, during the month of October we were always so excited about the impending holiday season and all of the yummy foods that brings. Halloween and bonfire marked the official start of the autumn winter treats. 'Bonfire Food' was always a big deal with our family; potatoes cooked on an open fire wrapped in tin foil, held by a tiny mitten-clad hand, while the other clutched a carton of soup, or a sparkler.

As autumn is my favourite month, I am already planning to cook up a storm. The start of my autumn fare is this flavoursome, satisfying but surprisingly low-cal BBQ tofu recipe.

The Recipe

Total Time - 15 mins including prep // Difficulty Level (1-5): 2 //Serves: 2 people

 Ingredients

  • 150g tofu (I used 1/2 block of the Cauldron Foods variety)
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon coconut nectar honey
  • 1/2 tablespoon Sriracha or ketchup if preferred
  • 1/2 tablespoon balsamic glaze
  • 1 tablespoon Coconut oil for frying

    Method

    1. Cut the tofu into steak sized portions as above
    2. Press the tofu over a bowl between your flat hands using tissue paper to release the water from the tofu - this will help achieve a firm texture when cooking
    3. In a bowl combine all of the other ingredients and mix well
    4. When the ginger and garlic are sizzling, add in the celery and shallots and cook on a medium flame, moving regularly to avoid burning
    5. Place the tofu into the bowl, coating in the mixture (if there is not much left, repeat again as above so that you have a small amount of sauce for serving)
    6. Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the tofu when the oil is hot
    7. After a minute or when the tofu has started to blacken to your liking, turn the steaks and spread a little more of the sauce onto each one and turn the heat down to the lowest setting
    8. Repeat again, turning and adding more sauce
    9. The tofu is ready when you are satisfied that the coating is sticky and blackened to your taste
    10. Serve the tofu and pour a little extra sauce over them

    The tofu inside!

    • I love to serve the tofu with simple mash and greens but it works really well burger style too
